Hello everyone! This is Ms. G. with some Bartlett Art updates. As we adjust to this new and ever-changung situation, Mr. Harrington and I will be using this website, www.BartlettArtDepartment.com to provide you with Art enrichment during our time away from the physical Art Studio. This website is accessible to everyone including families and students. Feel free to take advantage of these resources even if you are not currently enrolled in an art course! You can visit any class page, not just your own, to view the newest content posted by us.

We will continue to monitor your progress and provide feedback to you via your Google Drive folders where we are able to comment directly on your images. Don’t have a folder or having trouble with Drive? No problem! Email us your work and we will get it to the correct location. Using your cell phone and having trouble with Gmail? Creativity Comes Through Action. ​

On Wednesday, February 26, 2020 the Bartlett Art Department opened up its weekly art club to friends, family, and faculty for some art making fun! 
This was the BHS Art Department's second time opening up the art club to community members. Nine different families were represented including many Bartlett alumni. It was a wonderful opportunity for art students to give family members a view into their world.  Many art students across all grades have been working diligently through class, study hall, and after school to produce high quality and carefully designed bowls for our Empty Bowls event happening April 17th. 
Amber Johnson (senior) said of the experience, "Even though my dad couldn't participate in the art-making, I am glad he came to see me work and enjoy the art department atmosphere." 
Eren Torres (sophomore) was joined by her mom and sister. "It was a good experience to have people in your life see what you do on a day to day basis." History teacher Stefanie Appleby shared a similar sentiment about the experience of seeing students in a different context: "I value seeing my students in their element and learning from them." ​

Teaching is the best way to learn and share your passion for a subject. 

With this thought in mind, Mr. Harrington and Ms. G. invited faculty and staff from Webster Public Schools to participate in an after school Art class experience. The Leaders of the classes? Some of our most advanced art students in various media: Victoria Mann, Felicity Robillard, Mariya Lempicki, Vinessa Tankis, Sam Coombs, Duncan McIntyre, and Chris Hollows.  These students have reached Honors and AP level courses within the Bartlett Art department and spend hours in the studio every day. 

It is important that we engage in activities that allow students to showcase their strengths to us. 

For the students, it is a fun experience being able to share their interests outside of the classroom with their teachers.  We often only see students in a singular environment for a short period of time. These brief interactions never tell the full story. The Art Department is committed to offering more opportunities throughout the school year for both faculty and families to witness the depth of knowledge and skill that our students have been able to develop in the Visual Arts.  

A valuable teaching moment is one in which we show students our love of learning, and our ability to work through failure.

Teachers are asked to constantly model proper behavior and content mastery, but more importantly, we are responsible for teaching students how to learn. The process of learning is filled with trial and error. This means that a typical school day is filled with continuous failures that students must work through. How frustrating learning can be! A huge shout out to our WPS staff that joined us on Thursday. You arrived with a variety of skill levels, and used your growth mindset to work through the challenges! The Bartlett Art Department traveled to NYC on Friday April 27th to visit the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).  In between museum visits, our group of 50 students and 6 chaperones were able to walk through Central Park. There we saw musical performers, spring flowers, and various city skylines.  For most, this was their first ever visit to NYC. We look forward to visiting Manhattan again next year!

BHS Seniors Produce Promotional Video

Senior Digital Art Portfolio Student Julian Ortiz took the lead on a video project to showcase the Best of Bartlett to students and parents in the Webster community. The video, which travels through various departments in our school, highlights our facilities, student body, and overall environment. The compilation of photos and footage come from regular school days, special events, field trips, and performances to capture a comprehensive view of life at BHS. ​Julian is currently applying to art schools. Stay tuned!
Seniors Samir Azzaoui and Jut Stockhaus filmed tour footage of the building using the art department's GoPro. This special camera equipment was purchased through the generosity of the Janet Malsar Trust and has expanded our abilities for visual communication with the community.  Students are intrigued by this engaging technology and take the responsibility of it seriously. This video project was important to these students as they have spent many years at Bartlett and have each found success in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. All three students were able to share this video and their production process with the Webster School Committee on December 12th. The video will also be presented to 8th grade students and their families this week as part of our "Best of Bartlett" program to introduce the community to what Bartlett truly has to offer.  ​
